Hi! I moved to a new place. I would love for you to visit me there.

My 2010 Goals and 2 Awesome Techniques I Used to Set Them.

2010 goalsLooks like everyone is writing about their New Year’s  goals or resolutions, so I thought I would also share my goals with you as well as show you how I set them.

I was never really personal on this blog, I am a more reserved person by nature, but I think it is time for me to start coming out of my shell, especially considering the goals I am going after this year.

There seems to be lots of great advice on other websites on how to set clear goals and actually follow through.

I really like Steve Pavlina’s approach of choosing one primary focus for the year. However, one is too limiting for me  so I choose two primary focuses for the year.

This year my choices are relationships and business growth. You can choose health, spiritual growth, education, career etc. Just write down all the areas that are important to you and pick one or two that you’ll focus on the most this year.

Does it mean that you’ll completely abandon your health if you choose to focus on career? Of course not! The reason this approach works is because you are setting priorities and it gives your mind great focus.  It is like a compass for making more powerful choices in your everyday life.

Then you have to set clear and measurable goals for the areas you chose. If you chose career – your primary goals might be – find a new job, network more or whatever other goals you might have.

I prefer having no more than 3 big goals for each area you are focusing on. You can have up to 5, I don’t think you should go for more.

What’s in a word?

Besides choosing two life areas as my primary focus for the year I also chose two primary words to define that focus. Two words of the year.

Again I saw lots of people choosing one word or I saw someone doing one word for each month like January – trust, February – courage, March – action etc.

Two words for the year work the best for me however.

Why two? It’s like a main suit in your wardrobe and accessories. Both are equally important and the impression you make wouldn’t be complete or the same if you just had one without the other. So I chose two words.

What’s in a word? One word can express so much actually. It’s a symbol, but there is so much meaning in it. It’s a declaration, an affirmation, a reminder. It’s your mantra.

By combining these two techniques – choosing two life areas to focus on and two words to guide you, you are going to give your mind so much clarity and that’s exactly what your mind needs to help you in reaching your goals.

But it’s not even about reaching certain goals – that will hopefully come as a byproduct. It is about giving yourself power and making clear choices in everything you do. No more wondering whether you should do something or not. It’s all about feeling empowered and being aligned with your Higher Self in every choice you make.

You probably already have several words in your mind that you’d want to choose from. Listen to yourself and choose what feels right.

What words resonate with you the most right now? Courage, trust, action, love, connection…there are so many to choose from. What are your two words?

My two words.

My two words for this year are – authenticity and trust.

I’ll make sure that everything I do is aligned with who I am and my purpose and passions. I am also going through lots of personal changes in life so I choose to trust that everything will work out and Universe will take care of me. I choose to trust my inner wisdom, my intuition. I choose to let go of fear and worry.

Choose your two words and you’ll see how much more empowered you’ll feel.

My goals:

And for those of you who are interested in my business and relationships goals, here they are below.:

I have three main goals for my business:

1)   This blog. It’s about time for me to get serious with it. I started blogging having no clear idea of what it is all about (I hardly ever  read blogs before) and having no clear goals of how and why I am doing it.

It was a good learning experience but in the few months I was blogging last year I was mostly doing it in spurts of inspiration.  If I had inspiration to write something, I did. If not, I didn’t.

I also spent very little time marketing this blog. So in 2010 I plan on becoming more consistent with my posting schedule and create lots of highly valuable content.

I will also start guest posting and being more involved in the social media arena to market the blog.

Becoming a professional blogger is not my goal.  I want this blog to be an expression of who I am and give as much value as I can to the world and those who read my words.

I want it to be great resource for people to come to and learn. And finally I want it to be one of the platforms to offer my products and services in the future.

The main topic of the blog (I started it as highly biased towards the law of attraction) is going to be conscious living , finding yourself and your purpose in life ( living authentically) and also discovering and following your true passions and dreams. This is what is dear to my heart and what I know many of us need now. Major blog redesign is coming soon too to reflect all the changes.

2)   The second business goal is to release a new product and offer some coaching related to it.

I already have an audio course and guided meditation CD of the month program that came with it. I’ve been selling it online since last May mostly through pay per click and ezine advertising. It was a good product and I had great reviews from those who bought it and zero returns to date.

But I decided to take it down few weeks ago.  The main reason being, that product is not the True Me. I grew a lot consciously since I’ve created it and it just doesn’t feel like me anymore.

Some people asked me why I decided to take it down since I had no complaints and people who purchased benefited from it.  All of that is true and I am so grateful to my first customers, but in the scope of trying to live a more authentic life I want everything I do to be a True expression of who I am. This is the only way for me to feel 100% confident offering it to others.

So I plan on releasing a new product. The product is actually already ready, this is something I created for myself and use myself, so it can’t get any more like Me. Now I just need to prepare and package it for the launch. I won’t tell yet what the product is, I want to finish it first.

3)   And my last but probably most dear to my heart business goal for this year is to get  Positivity Place off the ground. If you read about my dream, you know that I want to open a place where personal development is fun and routine.

Something similar to a a  fitness club but for your Soul and Spirit. A place for people to come to on a regular basis to get closer to their True Selves, connect with others, learn something new. You can read more in detail about my Vision here.

I started working toward making that Vision a reality few months ago and am very excited.

We don’t have a permanent location yet so we organize personal development events and workshops across town here in Atlanta, GA. We already had a few personal development events and have more scheduled.

If you are in Atlanta, I would greatly appreciate you supporting my Vision and joining my local meetup group here or our guest list for event updates on our main website.

Some workshops and events are facilitated by me and my friend Marina who is an expressive arts therapist.

To most of them we plan on inviting various speakers and teachers from different fields of personal development.

My vision by the end of the year is to have a permanent location for Positivity Place where people will be able to come regularly and attend a class, or maybe form a mastermind group or just spend some time with themselves getting clear on who they are and what they want.

I also hope it to be a place for networking and connecting with like minded positive and goal oriented people.

My second focus:

And like I said my second focus for the year is relationships. Why relationships?

I am a very introverted person, one of those who would rather listen than talk. I don’t look like it but I am.

I think my introverted nature was even more enhanced when I moved to United States 5 years ago. Everything was new, I had no family and no friends here. New culture, new mentality that was very different from what I was used to. I had to go back to school again and figure out what I wanted to do with my life.

I think all of that caused me to get even further into my shell and not invite many people in. I probably made only a handful of friends in the first few years I lived here.

Last year was a breakthrough year for me though. I finally decided to get out and meet new people. And I met lots of great friends.  I feel that this year is going to be even better and more exciting in terms of new connections.

I realized how important relationships with others are and want to meet and connect with as many people as I can. In a way I am going out of my comfort zone doing it and I like that.

So those are my main goals for 2010.

What are yours? Are you clear about them? Have you written them down? If you still haven’t, please do so now.

Let’s make 2010 the best year ever!

Here are some great posts I’ve read lately that inspired me to write mine today.  All of them are one way or the other related to setting goals  and I am sure you can get lots of golden nuggets from each of them:

Lana, great article. One to to succeed with goals is to focus on one or two at a time. I’ve been focused on being aware, and letting go, and seeing where that ends up.

I’m glad you’re broadening your business goals to conscious living. I look forward to learning more.

Hi Lana. What a great post. I enjoyed reading your goals and how you will transform yourself as a blogger this year. Like you, I would also consider introverted person but I’m beginning to open up. I definitely think blogging and social media is a way to openly share our ideas and thoughts with the rest of the world and build good relationships with other people.

Besides that, I think it’s really cool that your operating a fitness club in Georgia. Is it something like yoga? Maybe I will join one in the future. I live in the west coast though near Los Angeles and have never been to the east coast.

America is definitely a culture shock, but I sort of had it “reversed” when I lived in Taiwan (an island next to China) for almost a year and then came back – big difference. But I like both. You said you came to America five years ago. Where did you come from if you don’t mind me asking?

Anyway, this comment is getting kind of long. Good luck with your goals and thanks for adding my blog post here! Oh yeah, my two words of the year would probably be “experience” and “now”. 🙂

Boris January 6, 2010 at 3:03 am

I love the authenticity that you transmit through your post!
One of my main goals is to develop more my graphic humor skills and use them to share my perspectives about personal improvement. However, this goal is not a new year resolution…
I respect who define new year resolutions but I prefer to think that we can make resolutions any day of the year. This increase the possibilities of improving in a ratio of 365 to 1!
All the best!

Rosangel January 6, 2010 at 4:50 am

This year is very special to me, because I’m a new blogger and I want to begin with my businees related to help people as a coach.
So may be my main words could be: courage and networking.
Courage to face the challenges and reinforce my self-confidence and networking because is the main factor to success in my own business in order to meet right people in the rigth time.
Thank you very much I appreciate that you have shared your dreams with us.

Lana January 6, 2010 at 8:18 am

Hey Hulbert,

No, it’s not a fitness club, I just made a comparison, I guess I need to express myself clearer. My vsion is to open a place where it will be routine for people to come and attend personal development workshops or connect with others or may be form mastermind groups or just get clear on their goals. Just a place with everything personal development related. The reason I compare it to a fitness club is because it is routine for us to go fitness clubs. I want my club to be routine too.

I am from Russia, don’t mind you asking at all:)

I know what you are talking about – reverse culture shock, I think it’s even an official name for it:) Thanks for the comment!!

Lana January 6, 2010 at 8:22 am

@ Boris, I totally agree and I also set goals throught the year. Those were my main goals, tehy were kind of general. I have clearer and smaller goals for each big goal and I set those as often as needed.

@Rosangel courage is a great word. It was actually my word last year. Good luck with your goals, I am sure you have all it takes to reach them!

Thats a great post and some wonderful goals for 2010. I agree that’s it’s probably not good to focus on too much but I do think it’s still good to write down those desires for the simple direction. Nudge your life gently in the direction and let it gather momentum!

Hi Lana — I definitely felt inspired when I heard about your workshops and I found myself wanting to learn more — is there a place I can do that?

Anastasiya January 7, 2010 at 3:19 am

Hi Lana, thank you so much for sharing your experience and your goals. It was so wonderful to find out more about you and to see the real person behind this blog! I think that this post has added a ton of value to your blog and it was a wonderful read for me today.
I think that my goals are somewhat similar to yours. I also have a business focus this year (get my blog moving more rapidly, write more guest posts, produce valuable content and maybe even some products for sale) but I will also focus on opening myself to the outside world more. Like you in your first year in the US I didn’t make a lot of friends in 2009. Babies, work from home, busy schedule and poor driving skills have all contributed to this situation. However, this is all about to change because tomorrow we are finally getting the house that we’ve been waiting on for the last 6 months and I have great hopes about making lots of new friends in a new area (this is more of a young-family neighborhood as opposed to the previous one where we lived.)
Anyway, that was a small piece of my personal goals and personal information 🙂
Thank you for mentioning my article in your post. That was very nice of you 🙂
Merry Christmas (Russian style)!

You’ve chosen a good word for this year. Though I’m also wanting to pursue same goal as yours I think I need some more preparation. Looking at your photo, you don’t seem an introvert to me. I’m surprised because you look sweet and friendly.

ONE of THE GUYS January 10, 2010 at 5:09 pm

I like your concept of focusing on two words. I’d have to think more about this, but my main personal goal this year, and it continues from last year is:

Being Present

Meaning, whatever I’m doing, I’m truly present and involved, not thinking about shopping or paying the bills or what vacation is coming up, etc. My goal is to truly soak in every experience at the time it’s happening. Otherwise what’s the point?

As far as business goals, most have to do with focusing on a few projects I’ve been working on and narrowing that focus.

Thanks for a nice read!

Lana January 10, 2010 at 8:58 pm

@ One of the guys, I totally agree, what’s the point otherwise. Being fully present always is more of a habit I’d like to have and it’s been on my resoltion list for a while now. Still not 100% there, but close:) Thank you for commenting.

J.D. Meier January 11, 2010 at 9:39 am

Very well written and I like your walk through.

For my yearly goals, I’ve simplified them a lot. I pick 3 compelling results I want for the year. I ask myself a simple question, if this were next year, what are 3 things I want under my belt. I tend to focus on experiences, since I think a lot of life is about experiences and growth.

A technique I use for growing relationships is I meet with somebody new and somebody old each week for lunch. It’s a simple, but effective habit.

Avish January 11, 2010 at 3:52 pm

Hi Lana,

Nice article with some good advice for the start of the year. I like the idea of picking “words” for the year. I remember reading “Eat, Pray, Love” and there was a bit in there where one person says that all cities have a single word that defines them. This got me thinking about what my word would be. i can’t say I have settled on one for this year, but your blog post is a nice reminder for me to get on and do it!

Armen Shirvanian January 11, 2010 at 6:26 pm

Hi Lana.

Nice job there picking two main focal points. People that pick very few do very much. It is always an inverse relationship.

I like the part about the words. Having a couple of words that you want to represent and improve upon will cause you to remember them often, which will lead to related actions. Authenticity is huge because people want to see us, and not some figment of us. The real us is all we need to show, and the rest that is fake can be disregarded. Trust is valuable because that is where the best comes from. If someone doesn’t trust me in some respect, we can get nothing done together in that respect.

Good call on the goals, and it appears as though dreams are being followed here.

@Armen, thank you:) You are right, those are just two words, but they lead to action. It’s all about focus and knowing exactly what to do and how to do it. Dreams are followed, gotta do what I preach:)

@Avish, totally agree, I also have two words for myself, just like you said every city has a word, I believe every person has a word too. Well, I of course have two of them and it works better for me. One is main suit, my foundation, another-accessories, creative side. Thanks for commenting!

Hi Lana – it is amazing how “lockstep” you and I are in terms of what we are doing in regards to moving our respective goals forward via our blogs this year. I could have written word for word what you said above and it would represent my situation exactly (with the exception that I have literally just started a new blog and retired my previous one). Glad to see their are like minds to me. I will be in ATL next week, too bad your meetup occurs in Feb, I would have enjoyed the chance to participate. I’ll do that via a subscription to your blog.
