How To Finally End Struggle and Find FREEDOM By Doing YOUR THING

There is probably one thought, one question that you always have in the back of your mind. And it seems like if you could really figure that one thing out, everything else would fall into place.

Everything else would be perfect and life would  become peaceful and joyful and there won’t be any more struggle or hard work.

Know what I am talking about?

The Thing you and only you were born to do here.

You know you have The Thing.

And maybe you figured out The Thing already but you still can’t seem to figure out the way to fully unleash it. To fully embrace it. To fully show it to the world and accept the abundance the world wants to give you for Your Thing.

So today I am on a quest to figure out a way to do The Thing the right way to end the struggle and find Freedom. Because Freedom is really the end result that we are all hoping to get by doing The Thing, The Right Way and being rewarded for it.

My questions are – How do I find a way to deliver The Thing in the hands of the people who need precisely That Thing? How do I figure out a way to do what I was meant to do and be who I was meant to be without any struggle or “hard work”? How do I find a way to deliver The Thing the exact way that will provide the most value to the world?

What does it take to fully unleash The Thing?

1. First and foremost get really clear on what The Thing is.

Sometimes it takes awhile. Sometimes it’s a process.  We don’t often know right from the start what The exact Thing is. We might be stumbling around it, but we need True Clarity.

Journaling for self-discovery really helps. All the answers are already within us. All it often takes is to start asking the right questions and writing down your answers.

What are the right questions?

What would I do if I couldn’t fail? What was I born to do? What is my special form of genius? What is my life purpose? What do I love and why do I love it?

(Questions “why” are extremely important.  It’s not the “what” that sheds the light on who we are, but “why”.  Why do we love what we love? Why do we do what we do?)

2. Once you got clear on The Thing, get clear on how you can package it into something meaningful and valuable. Is it a product or a service? How will it look? What features should you include?

3. Next, Get clear on your Ideal Client.  The Ideal Client is the person who needs That Thing the most.

Don’t think too hard about it. Know why? Because that person is probably a lot like you.

If you know yourself, there is a very high chance you know your Ideal Client. Because if The Thing you want to do is truly Your Thing, then you are really solving your own problem by doing it.

What about market research and all the other serious stuff everyone tells you to do?  All of that is helpful but in reality the only person you have to “research” is yourself.

Which leads me to the most important point.

4. Do something with Your Thing that will make you go – “WOW!” You are your Ideal Customer. You are the only person who you really have to surprise and make believe that what you have to offer is truly valuable.

If you are already doing The Thing – does it make you go “WOW”? Do you yourself want The Things that you are doing? Answer honestly. Do you yourself think that Your Thing is remarkable? Because if you don’t,  it will always continue being a struggle.

Do you want to buy your product? Do you want to hire yourself as a coach? Do you want to read your own blog posts and do you go “WOW” after reading them? Do you want to read your book and if you do – do you think it is truly the book you’ll be thinking about for days and telling your friends about?

Your Thing might be million times better than the other guy’s thing who is making ten times more money than you do, but if you yourself are not truly impressed by it, you’ll never be as successful as that guy.

So how can you surprise yourself? How can you really impress yourself? What does it take? What needs to be done? What needs to be changed?

Your attitude? Your way of delivery? Maybe you need to repackage The Thing? Or upgrade it?

Slow down a bit and get to the core, look inside your heart and figure out what it is going to take for you to go –“ WOW!”

What is it going to take for you to really want Your Thing?

I asked myself these questions lately and here are my answers:

1. I have to forget about money. And focus even more on the value I can provide. And provide that value in any way I can to anyone I can.

2. I have to become even more authentic and not be afraid to share more of my personal journey in everything I do.

3. I have to prepare for each coaching session as if I am saving the world, get more creative and ask more often: “How can I go an extra mile and what can I do to create an ultimate coaching experience for my client?” The answers are within, just start asking the right questions.

4. I have to put my heart and soul in absolutely everything I do and really listen to my muse when it shows up.  Routine and plans and goals are great but I have to listen to my inspiration even more often and roll with it while it lasts.

I want you to leave my blog and think about what you’ve read here. And in order for me to make you think, I have to, first of all, make myself think.

5. I have to get even more committed to what I am doing. I think I am 99% there but I have to push myself more to get to a full commitment.

6. I have to “act as if” more. Act as if is when you are writing like you have hundreds of thousands of subscribers already and expecting a call from Oprah any minute. Act as if when you are preparing for your next gig as if you are going to give a presentation at TED show. Act as if is expecting miracles and big things to start happening really soon.

7. I have to learn to let go more. This is counterintuitive – committed but let go at the same time. This should be on the top of your list though.

When you are too attached to Your Thing, you are not allowing it to fully bloom. You are blocking it from fully flourishing by being in the “I gotta figure it out, I gotta make it work.” mode.

It will come. Relax a bit. The Universe is on your side. It wants you to succeed. Commit and let go.

And keep asking “How can I surprise myself?” As soon as you surprise yourself, the World will be surprised too. And there will be lines of people standing after Your Thing. And there will be peace in your soul because you’ll know – you are doing Your Thing and your are doing it right.

So what is Your Thing? Do you know it? If you do, what do you need to change for the World to respond with lots of love to it? How can you surprise yourself? What should you change so you yourself truly want Your Thing?

Find the answers to these questions and the World will respond.

And you will have Freedom. And Freedom, I believe, is everything.

Lana -

Powerful. I believe we all have a calling within. I know I’ve found my vocation – helping others to use the light and power they already have inside them. I love what I do and I constantly say wow when I see what people can do once they find this. I think your WOW factor is a great point and I’m going to ponder how I can take this to an even higher level. Thanks so much for a great post.

Thanks Phil. Wow factor I something I knew for awhile I should be doing, but for whatever reason I wasn’t doing it. I guess I wasn’t fully committed. I am now. So expect lots of “WOWs” from me:) And I’ll expect lots of “WOWs” from you!

Lana, this is truly a fantastic post and I am going through the learning of getting ‘The Thing’ this very moment. I have ‘The Thing’ in my head, I know what it is, I know what it looks like, I know what the outcome is going to be and am working on delivering it.

Your post totally resonated with what I am thinking just now and from a personal and business point of view it’s brilliant.

This post alone could be expanded, packaged and sold as a product.

Thank you.

Hi Lana, I love the idea of journaling to help work out what your Thing is. I’ve spent a good part of the last week getting down some words to help me get clear on what my Thing is, who my client is, and how I will deliver my services. It’s been great to get my thoughts together, and down on paper, and then to refine and develop my ideas. A very powerful experience!

Maybe I missed something somewhere, but I find it odd that there isn’t any mention of values in this post. Doesn’t The Thing somehow relate to values we have deep within us that when they are being used we just seem to enter that state of flow where we use a high degree of skill and have a high degree of challenge? I’m just wondering how to reconcile the idea that each of us has heart virtues that we want to live and when we do, life is awesome and when those values get violated that enrages us.

Reply

20 Lana March 17, 2010 at 8:11 pm

Exactly JB King, values are what you discover when you find yourself and Your Thing and hopefully start living in alignment with them.

Lana, thanks for a very inspiring post. I believe that a lot of us want to do the Thing, but a) we’re too lazy to do the work it takes; b) we’re fearful of succeeding. Reflection is some of the most important work we can do. It needs to be done, and then we need to act, then reflect, then act….and so on. Thanks for the hard work you put into this post!

Hi Lana! I really like the way you write. The way you introduce your topic has that element of suspense and the way you sprinkle the thought provoking questions really encourages the reader to analyze your message.

With regards to the “Thing,” are you referring to the big scary guy in Fantastic Four? Oh, silly me. Why would you talk about such a “thing” anyway? LOL

So what is Your Thing? Do you know it? – Hmm… let me see here. I guess I’m still looking for that “thing.” Perhaps you may call it freedom, liberation, awakening, enlightenment, or whatever, but I just want to “know” what the real meaning of existence is.

If you do, what do you need to change for the World to respond with lots of love to it? – Oh, that’s pretty hard to answer. Many philosophers, scientists, spiritual leaders, and all sorts of people both ancient and modern have tried their best to change the world, but look at the way we live our lives today. Hehe.

How can you surprise yourself? – I guess I don’t really need to surprise myself. That day will eventually come… for all of us.

What should you change so you yourself truly want Your Thing? – Nothing. Nothing at all. I believe all of us should just learn to see ourselves based on what we truly are. =)

Awesome post! Have a great day, Lana!

Lana,

You are really on a roll with your last three posts. It definitely feels from an outsider’s perspective that you are taking things to the next level!

I am currently struggling with a lot of these questions right now as I try to decide exactly which direction I’m going to go. I know I have A LOT to offer, but there are just so many different directions one can go.

But I really love the idea of how The Thing should make you go “WOW!”. Like you said, you know your own blog posts are really good when you want to read them.

I think the whole process has to involve brutal honesty about what you are really, really good at and what you really, really like to do. This is why I tend to focus on doing what feels good. When you are doing what you are supposed to be doing, you are so ecstatic.

But along with the things that we absolutely LOVE to do, we usually have things we just like to do. And those things might need to be let go even though there is not necessarily anything wrong with them. Though I’m not sure it will, hopefully this makes sense.

My guess is that really deep down you probably already know the answers to your particular questions. But keep moving forward with the process and I know they will become very obvious soon.

Thanks again for the amazing post!

I hesitate to offer this as you don’t know me but here goes. We all have a calling that is within us from birth. Many of your questions indicate that you feel driven to perfect that calling almost as though you feel responsible if you can not get it into the hands of all who most need it. (I am speaking from how I too have felt in the past.)

Where do we believe that calling comes from? Who do we believe we are? What exactly are we taking responsibility for and is it our place to do so? What I am getting at is my personal belief so if any disagree follow your own heart.

For me, peace came when I surrendered my life to the only solution that to my intellectual mind truly makes sense: a Creator who has a plan far beyond what I can see and guides what we call our intuition, our muse, our inspiration, our calling.

Freedom comes from laying down responsibility for saving the world, relaxing and accepting what we feel guided to do as our path. As some might say, “Let Go and Let God”.

Like you I was no fan of religion and religious control. I was drawn to spirituality. I believed we are one with the Universe and The Secret at one time. Eventually I realized that we are not collectively creating because if we were the world would we created would be even worse than it is today.

I realized we are created and called by the true Creator and can hear His voice if we are willing to listen and believe it is possible. I made the ultimate choice to surrender control and found Peace, Freedom, Truth and daily guidance.

Now I know our workaholic tendencies and sense of responsibility are overblown. Timing and synchronicity are more important than frantic doing. We do not need to accomplish nearly as much as we think we do when there is a master plan and we accept our part in it.

Gail, thank you for this message, I really appreciate it. I truly believe in letting go and truly hope that some day I’ll be there 100%. That’s pretty much what I was trying to say with this post – how can we stop the frantic doing, hard work etc and just enjoy the flow. I believe that comes from having the courage to find and do what you love and enjoy and letting go of everything else.

Lana, even we retired folk would do well to heed your words. I decided to be done with struggle as soon as I retired, decided to follow my passion (gardening, traveling, writing), and I think when passion is followed, it’s just not at all like work. Oh, it might be physically taxing, or mentally challenging, or financially precarious, but at the same time it’s immensely satisfying, keeps the well of gratitude for life flowing strong, and it is a profound freedom.

All you “youngsters” out there — embrace your passion,. stoke your dreams, and listen to Lana!

Hi Lana,

I don’t know how in the world I have missed this awesome post from you. You always deliver “WOW” and this post is such a reflection of that.

I have recently been going through something “HUGE” in my life. And several things came up inside me when you mentioned “If you are already doing The Thing – does it make you go “WOW”? Do you yourself want The Things that you are doing? Answer honestly.”
And I had to be completely honest with myself. I know one of the Biggest things is really being clear and being open to your growth as well. Everyone makes his/her own path. But if you blaze yours with your own trails with clarity, with purpose, mix with passion You are ultimately right. You will find “your thing” and you must own that yourself. But not be too attach as you said, “When you are too attached to Your Thing, you are not allowing it to fully bloom.”
I know sometimes it may take a while to find the thing but as long as you take that first step in believing in yourself and having faith. Keep on that road “the thing” will find you.
Thanks Lana for another great post.
I am honored to find a friend in you.
