Hi! I moved to a new place. I would love for you to visit me there.

One Of The Most Powerful Questions That Can Change Your Life

I have a question for you today. I bet you heard this question at least 5.5 times before.

My question is – have you actually answered it? Have you actually taken the time to think about it and dared to get truly clear on it?

This is one of the top questions that are mentioned in every personal development/self improvement/business and many other books out there.

This is the question you hear lots of remarkable people telling you to ask yourself.

This is the question that will lead you to the edge of your Greatness and show who you can truly be.

Damn, tell us the question already! I know but wait a second.

You have to promise me to answer it. You have to promise me that you’ll actually take the time and answer it in as much detail as you can.

Ok, here we go.

What would you do if you could not fail?

Surprised? Disappointed?

Really, what would you do? If you knew you would succeed for sure.  If you knew that all of your financial needs would be met.  If you knew that the world would respond with lots of love to whatever it is you decide to do.

What would you do?

How often do you ask yourself this question? When was the last time you asked it and actually found courage to answer it?  Answer fully.  Answer without holding anything back. Answer with your heart.

Can you do it now?

What would you do if you could not fail? What would you do if you could be, do and have anything you want?

Simple question. But 95% of the populations never answer it in their whole lifetime.

Will you dare?

Can you write down your answer?

When I ask this question during a workshop, people often get really uncomfortable. They say – “I don’t know”. But then when  pressured to write at least something down, they often come up with really unexpected answers.

Writing things down forces us to get so much clearer. And requires much more courage.

So write down your answer.

And then ask people around you. You’ll be surprised how many lives you can change just by asking one simple question.

They will be puzzled at first. We are not asked this question often. They might not know what to say.  But they will start thinking. And most likely continue thinking about it for awhile.

And the motion will be set. Can you imagine a wave of energy coming from all around just because people started thinking what they would do if they couldn’t fail.

The world will be transformed. Yeah, I am talking about revolution here!

And for the first time in my life I can put my hand on my heart and say – I would do exactly what I am doing now. I would be writing, creating products to change the world, working with people through coaching and workshops and making my Positivity Place vision a reality.

I am doing all of that because it makes me feel creatively free, useful, creating change and meaning. Those are my core feelings.

I wouldn’t change a thing in my Vision. And it feels incredible to know that.

So what’s YOUR THING? What’s your Vision? What would you do?

Topi March 15, 2010 at 7:41 am

Hi Lana, I know the answer straight off, which is why I know it’s the truth. I’d be working in my own business with my dear friend and business partner helping other people and businesses to achieve their full potential. The exciting thing is, I’m there, and it’s happening, and it feels so right! Asking yourself a question like this has the effect of bringing you right back to the moment, no looking backwards or forwards, just here and now, and it’s a very powerful experience. Thanks for making that happen.

Lana March 15, 2010 at 3:31 pm

That’s awesome that you are living your dream Topi and you are right, asking a question makes you to realize that you are living it already. Here and now.

Megan "JoyGirl!" Bord March 15, 2010 at 12:20 pm

Well, that’s a good question! My answer revolves around the two topics I seem to have charted as being my “difficult areas” this time around: love and career.

Career-wise, I’d be a book author, which I’m halfway doing now, so that’s good. Quit a good job last year to pursue it, and am on my way.

Love-wise, I’d be in a long-term committed relationship. That one I’m having more difficultly with… Lots of lessons to learn, self-obstacles to overcome, fears to embrace and miracles to behold. But I’m hopeful.

Have a beautiful day!

Lana March 15, 2010 at 3:33 pm

Thank you for sharing Megan. I guess I was focusing more on vocation in this post because I haven’t even thought of love. I think love comes when you are ready, there is not much you can do to force it to come:)

Eduard @ People Skills Decoded March 15, 2010 at 12:39 pm

This is one of the first really powerful questions I discovered many years ago, when I went into personal development mode. I still use it and I think it’s a very good tool for realizing most of our fears are irrational, and our own responsibility for our own life. Instead of being a victim.

Lana March 15, 2010 at 3:34 pm

You are right Eduard! BTW, I like your new name, congrats!

Ryhen | Mind Power March 15, 2010 at 2:21 pm

Hi Lana! My first time here. Before anything else, I must say that that picture of yours at the top really adds color to your blog. Really! I just can’t stop staring at it. lol. Ok, now back to the comment…

[[What would you do if you could not fail? What would you do if you could be, do and have anything you want?]] – Well, I’ve always wanted to be like Buddha, Christ, Laozi, Bodhidharma, Confucius, and the rest of the masters of ancient philosophy and spirituality. I actually don’t mind suffering even more than what I’m currently experiencing as long as the true nature of reality unfolds itself. If such a thing is possible for me in this lifetime, I’ll teach everyone I know so that we can all stop suffering and start partying in the higher realms of existence. Have a great day!

Peace and respect,

Lana March 15, 2010 at 3:38 pm

Thanks for the compliment Ryhen, I hope the picture doesn’t distract from the blog itself too much:) Wow, and your goals are big and bold and very noble. I wish you lots of luck with that. (do you think suffering is a required component? maybe it’s possible to skip it?)

Ryhen March 16, 2010 at 12:36 pm

no prob. =)

[[do you think suffering is a required component? maybe it’s possible to skip it?]] – Without suffering, one cannot understand compassion. Without compassion, one cannot understand love. And as the Beatles say, “Love is all we need.” lol

Jonathan - Advanced Life Skills March 15, 2010 at 6:14 pm

Hi Lana, I am so pleased to say that I would be doing exactly what I am doing. Wow, that felt so good to be able to say. I don’t even believe in failure as most people think of it. I believe in learning. Sometimes we learn what not to do and that’s really valuable. It’s a much more empowering perspective than “failure.”
.-= Jonathan – Advanced Life Skills´s last blog ..Aging, Can You Control It? =-.

Lana March 15, 2010 at 6:26 pm

I agree Jonathan, failure is just another step to higher horizons. Not everyone views it that way though.

Nichole March 15, 2010 at 6:32 pm

What would I do? Ask me again in a few days.

I don’t know; I DO know that whatever it is, it is so big that I can’t even comprehend it right now. It would be revolutionary, and powerful, and spectacular. And grand. So grand, I haven’t given myself permission to wrap my own mind around it.

Lana March 15, 2010 at 8:46 pm

Nichole, I’ll make sure to ask you! Revolutionary, powerful and spectacular – I can so see you doing it!

Anastasiya March 15, 2010 at 8:08 pm

Hi Lana,
I have answered that question a few years ago for myself. Right now I am living the life that I have chosen after answering the question.
My answer was being a mother, being a faithful wife and living a creative and balanced life.
The only part of my dream that is not true yet (only yet because that part takes time) is owning my own Pilates studio. Right now I am working in that direction and I am sure that I will get there soon enough because I am Very Clear about what I want.
.-= Anastasiya´s last blog ..Is Vegetarianism a Part of a Balanced Diet? =-.

Lana March 15, 2010 at 8:50 pm

Anastasiya, you are an inspiration of Clarity! It doesn’t matter if you are 100% there yet, what matters is that you are doing it and you are clear on what you want. And this is great!

Annie Stith (Gr8fullAS) March 15, 2010 at 9:06 pm

Well, first I’d feed, shelter, and clothe absolutely everyone on the planet, while looking them in the eye, telling them they’re loved and they matter, and giving them a hug. (This would also automatically stop all war.) THEN I’d become an awesome writer.

Lana March 15, 2010 at 10:53 pm

Wow, those are inspiring dreams Annie, thank you for sharing with us!

One of the best questions ever.

I would be a personal development blogger who teaches, anybody who will listen, that they can change their life for the better 🙂

Iyabo Asani March 15, 2010 at 11:16 pm

Exactly what I am doing right now. I asked this question of myself before I started coaching and that is how I created my coaching business.

I love this question.

Yay for more people who are doing exactly what they truly enjoy and love! Thanks for sharing Iyabo!

Evita March 16, 2010 at 2:27 am

Hi Lana

LOL- the suspense was great 🙂

So yes, you are so right we have all been asked this before, and yet many refuse to answer it or just simply do not take it seriously indeed.

The good news is that I am doing what I love and following all my passions. Why for example am I not doing “all” the things that I set out to do… I considered this…is it fear? Well I realized that for me it wasn’t. The way I live my life is that I know that I am always doing what is right for this moment, so as much as I love what I am doing right now, I know there is more to come when I decide to

I just don’t worry about failing anymore in really anything, because I have come to a point in my life where I know I am not living life for others, but for myself.

Thank you for this great and thought provoking post!

Lana March 16, 2010 at 3:35 am

Thank you for this comment Evita, I know exactly what point in life you are talking about. I am at that point too!

Lance March 16, 2010 at 2:58 am

Hi Lana,
This is a wonderful question…and one that, when done with care – touches us at our core. For me, this have been a journey with this question. Perhaps it is with all of us, as we move through our lives, and into new directions in our heart. (if we are really looking within to see what our heart is speaking)

So…that journey…it is one I continue on. If I could not fail, would I do anything differently today? Well..the honest answer is that I probably would. I am at a spot of contentment in my life…and I think that’s a sign that it’s time to dig a little deeper. And reviewing this question is a great way to do that.
.-= Lance´s last blog ..Sunday Thought For The Day =-.

Lana March 16, 2010 at 3:40 am

You are so right, Lance. It is a journey and I don’t think it ever ends – the deeper we dig, the more we see and the more we want to dig.

J.D. Meier March 16, 2010 at 5:33 am

I might make the same long way round trip that Ewan and Charlie took. That was just unbelievable. Or if I was feeling sassy, I might try to vanish the Statue of Liberty like David Copperfield or maybe give David Blaine’s Vertigo stunt a shot.

At the end of the day, I’m not limited by fear of failure. If anything, I try to figure out the path where I create the most value — giving my best where I have my best to give. I always give myself to something more than me, for the greater good, which makes it easy for me to focus on the mission and fear of failure just never comes into the picture.

I think my lack of fear of failure is a mash up of:
– Life’s short
– failure is feedback
– No Fear (the stickers on cars, the emblem on shirts)
– You only live once
– You regret the things you didn’t do, not the things you did
– You don’t fail until you give up

Sometimes it’s a Spartan thing … other times it’s a Viking thing … other times it’s a Rocky thing.
.-= J.D. Meier´s last blog ..Information Overload is Not the Problem – It’s Filter Failure =-.

Lana March 16, 2010 at 5:47 am

I LOVE your Spartan-Viking-Rocky mash up, JD!

Natalia B. March 16, 2010 at 6:02 am

At first, my thoughts started to move heavy ,like an old mill’s wheel ,
searching for the “what” ?… what ?… maybe “this” ? – not really interested … or “that” ?- do not care for that either…
and than it came to me :
If I absolutely could not fail I would be just as I am now – MYSELF !!!
and live the way I live now, by the ideas that feel true to me , free from the judgment and the opinions of others about how , when and what I should be and do in MY life .
Be free from a fear to be “not enough”,to make a mistake ,free from the race for “more” “better”, bigger”,”faster”…
To live , grow and bloom without effort , naturally , like a tree : enjoying miracles of every day : new leaf , a song of a bird , hot sunny day, traveler getting rest under my shade , young lovers first kiss , stars at night , rain, snow , blooming again… to be grateful for everything … just be …

Lana March 16, 2010 at 6:24 am

Natalia, what you’ve written is absolutely beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing this, you are living your Greatness!

Evelyn Lim March 16, 2010 at 3:19 pm

I have asked myself similar questions. On review, after having asked myself them many times over a period of time, I have found out that I was not completely honest with myself in the beginning. Fear has been stopping me. Then again, I realized that it would not have been easy for me to take a leap at the start. I am on an evolving journey and it is important to recognize that I need to peel off the layers to reveal who I really am.

Lana March 16, 2010 at 3:51 pm

So true Evelyn, it is an evolving journey and we usually can’t go all the way right from the start.

Greg Blencoe March 16, 2010 at 4:58 pm

Thanks for yet another powerful post.

For me, this question serves to expose all of those areas where we have limiting beliefs. It makes me realize how, for whatever reason, our minds often assume we can’t accomplish something. But it is so liberating to ask this question and shine a light on the fear that is there. This is often the only thing holding us back.

I also enjoyed reading about your Positivity Place vision. Great idea!

Thank you Greg! You are right all fears get exposed with this simple question.

Tom Volkar / Delightful Work March 16, 2010 at 9:18 pm

Allright a blogger who challenges. Great going. I loved the setup in the beginning of your post and it worked. As a true calling coach I’m already in the midst of multiple career projects that just a year ago scared the hell out of me.

So now I’ll answer this question personally.

If I knew that I could not fail I would put myself out there and be a fool for love. I’m on eHarmony right now and doing that very thing. No settling this time. It’s authentic love or bust!

Lauren March 17, 2010 at 6:15 am

Hi Lana,

Interesting question! I am happy to realize I don’t relate to fear about what I want to do in life.

That is not to say I don’t have any fears. I do. But I have always forged a path by doing what I want to do. In high school I gave a commencement speech entitled “A Different Drummer” based on Thoreau.

It was about following our own path, even if it is different from what others would choose. Looking back recently I realized this is how I’ve lived my life.

It is a powerful thing, though, to face our fears. I remind myself of this because I believe this is one of the ways we continue to grow and expand.

Sometimes, though, I think a great way to grow is to FOCUS on what IS working and take our focus off our fears.

Thanks for a thought-provoking discussion!

Lana March 17, 2010 at 6:47 am

Thank You Lauren for such a great comment and I can so hear you – focus on what is working and take focus off of everything else.

zmajeva March 17, 2010 at 4:08 pm

Stephen - Rat Race Trap March 18, 2010 at 12:12 pm

Lana, that’s a great question. I have to admit I don’t know the answer to it but I’m surely going to be thinking about it now.

Thanks Stephen, so great to know I could inspire someone to think about it.

JB King March 18, 2010 at 4:21 pm

I seem to have a few different answers to the question. My initial reaction is, “I’d find some way to fail!” as being told not to do something, I’ll find that loophole or philosophical hair to split a bazillion ways.

Stepping back from that darkness a bit, I think my next line of thought is along the lines of immortality. I want to live forever, or at least have some part of me carry on when my life ends as death is one of the things where at times it scares me and at other times I see it as a peaceful transition to another existence. While I like using my strengths, I like just enough variety that I don’t get too bored doing the same thing over and over again. I like learning and achieving things so I’d probably try to change the world to leave my mark on things. That would give me some intellectual satisfaction, but then comes that next challenge of emotional satisfaction. Having deep relationships where something is created that wasn’t there before intrigues me but I’m not quite sure how to go down that rabbit hole.

Next comes figuring out what kinds of changes in the world would I want to do. Would I go ahead and create something like “The Matrix” to try to end human suffering? I would probably take a shot at ending bullying or at least finding better ways to deal with it as that was one of my struggles as a child that would likely make me rather happy to know I stopped that. I suppose I know that I don’t have a simple answer to this other than my initial response.

Lana March 19, 2010 at 5:43 am

I loved your answers JB, I think now it is the matter of figuring out what The Answer is and starting doing it:)
.-= Lana´s last blog ..One Of The Most Powerful Questions That Can Change Your Life =-.

Mike Korner April 4, 2010 at 7:47 pm

Like many people, my first response was “I don’t know”. Your post compelled me to think about this a lot though until I finally got the real answer … if I could not fail, I would do EVERYTHING. That is either the greatest answer possible or the scariest. I can’t decide. Either way, with that squared away, I guess the next step is to just decide what’s first on my EVERYTHING list and get busy 🙂

p.s. Great stuff on your website Lana! Lots of awesomeness is heading your way 🙂

Lana April 5, 2010 at 6:14 am

Everything – wow Mike! Exactly, now just decide what is the first thing you are going to do. Thank you so much for your kind words, I appreciate it. And thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Nea | Self Improvement Saga October 22, 2010 at 2:39 am

Hi Lana. You know, I’m happy to say that I’d be doing what I’m doing now…though on a larger scale. And I’m working towards that. I realize that nothing is standing in my way except me. I dare to proceed.

Tim "The Potato Guy" May 6, 2012 at 4:49 am

Simple Lana,

I’d do everything. Id bike, run, swim, compete, give, be kind, be me….just everything …

Tim "The Potato Guy" May 6, 2012 at 4:53 am

oh, and just reading your reply to the same answer above…

I’d give of myself to others, be generous with my time and good fortune. And then I continue on with my own personal goals and ambitions.

Deb May 6, 2012 at 10:56 pm

It didn’t take long for the answer to rise to the surface: I would start a school that would change the way we teach our children. I’ve always wanted to start my own school. Might not happen here, or soon, but with any luck it WILL happen, even if it’s only for my own two kids and go from there. 🙂
