Hi! I moved to a new place. I would love for you to visit me there.

True Clarity, Fear, Lizard Brain, Reducing The Importance of The Goal or How To Gain Freedom

They say 95% of the population is not clear. And that’s the main reason they don’t get what they want.

Sounds so ridiculously simple. Just get truly clear. Why don’t people do it?

I think there are two reasons why people don’t  “get clear”

1.  Fear. What if I get clear on my dearest dreams and they never come true.

I had this fear too. I think most of us have it to some degree. The fear comes from lizard brain’s protective mechanism that wants to keep us in the comfort zone. And it also comes from not understanding how this reality works.

2. Not understanding what True Clarity means. Most of us pretty much have figured out how to set clear goals. The problem is that just  goal-setting is not enough.

I’ll discuss in detail each of those points.

Number one reason we are staying where we are. Fear is what keeps people doing jobs that they hate, in relationships that don’t make them happy.

Fear is what prevents us from finding our true dreams and taking action on them.

Fear is what our lizard brain or logical mind uses to protect us.

Why? Because where we are is a known territory. We might not be happy here. But we are safe.

“Safe” is the only thing our lizard brain is concerned about. Screw happiness. Screw fulfillment.  Screw life purpose. Let’s stay where it is safe.

Change is not safe. Anything that doesn’t come with 100% guarantee is not safe. So let’s stay here. That’s the logic of the lizard brain.

How does it keep us here in the “safe” place? By making us doubt, procrastinate, worry, never get clear on what we truly want and never take actual wholehearted action on what we truly want.

Breakthroughs happen when things get not so “safe” anymore

Ever noticed that major breakthroughs people usually have is when they are pushed against the wall or when they hit the rock bottom and there is nowhere else to go but up.

That’s because the only way for  lizard brain to let us do something is to show it that “here” is not safe anymore.

Stupid isn’t it? I went through this experience firsthand, I’ll tell you the story some day.

Fear also comes from not understanding the nature of reality. No, I won’t talk about the Secret and Law of Attraction. But really, we fly to the Moon for God’s sake.

Truly, anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

The only law I believe in is the Law of Abundance. This world is full of abundant choices and opportunities. All we have to do is notice them and take action on them.

And that’s where Clarity comes into play. Without being fully clear, you’ll never notice and never take action on anything.

What is True Clarity?

The second reason we never actually get clear is because so many of us don’t fully understand  what True Clarity means.

True Clarity starts from knowing your True Self and Your Purpose you came here with. Purpose comes from knowing yourself too. That’s actually your primary purpose on this Earth is to be who you are. To live Your Truth.

Setting goals that don’t come from your True Authentic Self is a hit and miss game. Why? Of course, you can still reach them. But in reaching them not only your mind (lizard brain) will resists. But  your soul will resist too.

Double resistance. Result?  The goal will never make you happy and will feel like lots of struggle to reach.

Again, can you reach it? Sure you can. If you push long enough and hard enough, you can reach anything, but what’s the cost and what’s the point?

Want an easy way? Get clear on who you are first. Get clear on your Authentic Vision.

Then and only then set clear goals aligned with Your Truth. This way you’ll get the soul on your side.

Mind is only one that will be left to convince after your soul is on your side but if you know the tricks it’s going to be easy too.

Now that the goal is clear, you got your mind focused. It will start noticing opportunities. To get it to take action on them you have to make it believe that the goal is reachable.

Three steps to help convince your mind:

Reduce the importance as much as possible. I know, sounds weird, but trust me it works. Consciously reduce the importance of the goal.

Why? Because when the goal is too important, lizard brain gets activated. What if I fail at reaching this important goal? What a disappointment that’s going to be.

Lizard brain will be activated within seconds and turn on its protective mechanism. It doesn’t want you to be disappointed. It will make sure you stay where you are, where it is “safe”.

While consciously reducing the importance,  keep you ideal outcome in mind. Get into that ideal slide (you ideal reality) as often as you want.

Don’t overdo it though. That’s why lots of people fail at visualization. They start taking it too seriously. When you are taking it too seriously, you send the signal to your mind that the goal is too important.  It turns on the protective mechanism.

Visualize for pleasure, when you feel like it. Don’t overdo it. Don’t pressure yourself.

Visualization or getting into your ideal slide helps your mind to believe, it impresses the goal into it.

Take The Next Step. Don’t worry about all the steps. Take the next step that you know.

You won’t know all of them anyway so stop worrying about knowing every single step to get where you want to be.

Again, do it consciously. Consciously tell yourself that the only step you are going to worry about is the next step. And take it.  Then you’ll know the next step. Take it.

The more steps, the more comfortable your mind becomes. It sees that there is no danger. It starts believing you more and more. And as a result taking action becomes easier and easier.

Opportunities seem to appear everywhere. They were there all along. It’s just since now the mind is more comfortable and doesn’t feel endangered with the goal, it helps you notice opportunities more and more often. Until one day you find yourself living the dream. Until one day you gain True Freedom.

Get clear on who you are. Find the goals aligned with Your Truth to get your soul on your side and to actually experience happiness and fulfillment from reaching those goals.  Convince your mind using the steps above. Until one day you find yourself living Your Dream.

Do it. It works.

Hi Lana,
I love the comment “Take The Next Step. Don’t worry about all the steps”. That’s so true, trying to think of and plan for all of the steps just does your head in, but if you just go back to basics, one step, one at a time, one after the other…it just all falls into place. I think that simple approach gives you the mental breathing space necessary to keep a hold on your clarity and vision.

yes, Topi, that approach is definitely what helps me a lot too.

How do I find my Truth? I can understand the idea of focusing on the next step, but how do I find that? Is it just quieting my mind to see what my soul wants? Hopefully the questions make sense.

Another thought to share is that there is also the fear of success. What if I get what I want and then I don’t want it? Ever have those situations where you think you wanted something and then got it in order to discover there was something else you really wanted? I’ll grant you that that is something coming from my logical analytical mind but it has worked so well for me for so long, I don’t want to kill it. I want to leverage it and believe there should be a way for it to live in harmony with my soul’s desires. I’m not totally sure what that is yet, but I suppose I may have found part of my Truth today which may have been the next step. Is that even possible? I realize that I may come across as a Doubting Thomas here, but I do believe in what I’m asking and have the occasional confidence issue at times.

Lana April 12, 2010 at 4:26 pm

getting clear on what you want is the answer. It will take care of the fear of success and the next step. don’t kill the logical mind of course, it is very useful. Just don’t let it keep you in a doubting state.

JB King April 12, 2010 at 5:57 pm

Ah, so while my logical mind can show me stuff, I have to know to stand up to it and overcome the fear and doubts to live my life. Do I have that right? Sure seems right to me. 🙂

Lana April 13, 2010 at 12:13 am

yep, you got it right JB!

Jeremy Johnson April 12, 2010 at 5:37 pm

Lana, this is exciting and so very true. The ‘Lizard Brain’ analogy rings true and has helped me see my limiting beliefs. Getting clear on what you want AND accepting it. Two very important parts. Looking forward very much to your product launch.

Evita April 13, 2010 at 12:19 am

Hi Lana

What an awesome article! Yes, yes, yes – to live our truth! What could be better and more important than that.

Fear paralyzes us and yes, so many of us sell out to the comfort of being. But there is a life full of “life” waiting for us to be delved into and enjoyed. So what are we waiting for…. 🙂

Focus and clarity are amazing and manifest amazing things when we just allow those to shine through us!

Jonathan - Advanced Life Skills April 13, 2010 at 12:44 am

Lizard brain, that’s funny Lana. I think of visions like seeds. If you watch a seed to closely it never seems to grow. Plant it, water it, and go about your life. Next thing you know it’s: “Wow, look how much that little sprout grew.”

Therese Miu April 13, 2010 at 4:00 am

Hi Lana, I read that post first at Seth Godin about Lizard brain and instantly I was glued to his message. I was wondering when you were going to write a blogpost about it. I opened my email
BAM there it was 😉
So timely. First of all this is a VERY IMPORTANT POST! For so long since we are at a young age we lived with other people’s truth. From society to our parents to friends. But the true freedom really comes from as you said, “To live Your Truth.” I too have struggled with this for a very long time. That’s why working on myself and living authentically following my heart my true bliss has been a GREAT journey of mine for some time because I spent so many years before that esp. teenage years to early 20s living other people’s truth of me.
Nowadays I live with so much purpose and meaning to everything i do wherever I am planted. And will be writing this in my journal tonight as I so enjoy learning from you Dear Lana, “Get clear on who you are. Find the goals aligned with Your Truth to get your soul on your side and to actually experience happiness and fulfillment from reaching those goals. Convince your mind using the steps above. Until one day you find yourself living Your Dream.”
Thank You again =)

Hilary April 13, 2010 at 4:06 pm

Hi Lana .. what an excellent post … just what I’ve been going through – and a friend said to me just be clear and focus on what you want and what you need to achieve .. and then I added “do it” .. ie start moving in that direction .. now it’s coming right. So the lizard brain is firmly tucked away and the clear brain is functioning now.

Really good – and I do hope all goes well with the launch of your Clarity Manifesto .. I feel it will – all the best in the run up .. have fun .. Hilary

J.D. Meier April 13, 2010 at 4:17 pm

It lines up nicely with what I’ve learned to be true … drive by your why, live your values, and play to your strengths … and give your best where you have your best to give.

I’m reading The Answer to How is Yes now and it’s interesting how much it aligns with your points on fear and true clarity. If anything, the book is brutal about answering “why” before worrying about any “how” or even “what.” It’s all about making meaning and living a meaningful life …where you are the ultimate maker of your meaning and the ultimate maestro of your own experiences and possibilities.

Lana April 14, 2010 at 4:17 am

exactly JD, “why” is the most important question!

Phil - Less Ordinary Living April 13, 2010 at 6:10 pm

Lana – I love it when you say “truly anything is possible”. I always live by the maxim that “everything is possible” if we only allow ourselves to admit it. Getting clear on what we want to be possible is a great start as we can move toward it one step at a time – we also get a mindset that sees every step as progress regardless of the short term implications. Thanks for another great post.

Lana April 14, 2010 at 4:18 am

everything is a progress, this phrase helps me a lot when things don’t happen as quickly as I’d like them to. and everything is truly possible if we convince our minds in it.

rob white April 13, 2010 at 7:27 pm

Hi Lana, You make some great points here. I especially loved: “Setting goals that don’t come from your True Authentic Self is a hit and miss game.” I recently had a friend that had a colossal business failure in the restaurant industry. It is obvious now that he entered the business out of a sense of vanity. He valued ‘looking good’ and ‘being liked’ over his True Authentic Expression. He could have saved a lot of pain and aggravation if he had been pursuing something from his True Self. We have all gotten wrapped up in that to some degree.

Lana April 14, 2010 at 4:20 am

that’s true Rob, we all are wrapped up in it to some degree, what’s important is to be conscious about it and consciously choose to stay aligned with our Authentic Selves. I noticed that life transforms when we do.

Nadia - Happy Lotus April 13, 2010 at 9:20 pm

Hi Lana,

It is amazing how so many people have no idea what they want. When you are not clear as to what you want, you get mixed results. All thought creates form and if our thoughts are all jumbled, then we create jumbled results.

Details are so important. The more clear we are on the details, the easier it will be to create a reality that we truly love.

And you are so right…it definitely does work. Dreams do come true.

Travis April 14, 2010 at 12:04 am

Fear is, unfortunately, always the #1 reasons we never achieve the things we set out to do. Fear of failure, fear of what others will think of us along the way, or fear of success itself and thinking we don’t deserve it. Unfortunately, I went through many years of my life with the lizard brain mindset… FORTUNATELY though, today is a much different story. I’ve learned from those years that fear has hindered and instead have channeled what was once fear into positive action.
